The whilom Wardens of Wudelic woods are watchers and sentinels of the wild. Their roots run deep like the oaks and elders. Proud as towering pines. Their history is as an old language etched into ruins, they are now known as the Woodcutters.
Eerie for their Ghost-lights, glowing orbs that sit on their brow, folks are not sure what to make of them. The patriarch, Alaric, is a descendant of the first Warden, having the ear of the woodland goddess, Lhodyn. She is the embodiment of all that is wild - capricious at best, vindictive at worse.
War descends over Alaric’s village as borderland marauders murder and enslave all. In reaction, Lhodyn seizes the village children and hides them within her woodland realm. Alaric is now faced with a hard choice, to remain and endure certain brutality while he searches for the young ones or flee with the remainder of his family, their best chance for survival.
THE WOODCUTTER KING is a fusion of narrative styles, blending literary sensibilities with fantasy aesthetics. The heart of the story is about a father and son and their experiences after a family tragedy. But in true epic fantasy form, there is more at play than their personal struggles. Something mysterious lays hidden in the Wudelic Woods, just as they are beginning to discover.

From the very first page...to the very last one, this book hooked me. The world building, the fully fleshed out characters, and the well thought out plot progression made this a really engrossing read for me. Making a father and his young son the source of the story, using their individual experiences to build the book around, really made this book what it was - brilliant. But then dissolves into cruel harsh realities that leave soul scars. War forever transforms this young family and its confidence/convictions.
A story with mythical monsters, severities, forbidden places and page turning surprises. Worthy to be played out on the cinematic screen. A magnificent must read.
My favorite thing about The Woodcutter King, and what initially grabbed my attention, is the rich, classic fantasy style that it embodies. Just take a glance at the first few lines of the synopsis

Doesn't that just make the epic fantasy fan in you want to snatch this book up? The Woodcutter King is full of legend, adventure, and a well-written world. The pacing of this book felt very steady, neither fast nor too slow. It has the feel of fantasy in the tradition of Tolkien in the sense that there is a lot of description and lore that is told throughout the book.
Graham's writing is truly developed and mature in nature. The dialogue itself is not the strongest point, but the rest of the narrative is written with a great amount of grace and meaning - I had my sticky tabs handy and ended up marking quite a few passages throughout the book.
At the heart of this story are the two main characters Alaric, the Woodcutter, and his son, Edrick. Graham takes us deep into the thoughts, desires, and struggles of this man and boy, and I found myself captivated by the events that they experienced, both together and apart. In addition to Alaric and Edrick is a fairly good-sized cast of characters that takes a little while to get used to, but once you remember who's who, everything begins to come together.
Although I really enjoyed this book and its components overall, I feel that it could have used a little but of cleaning up or editing to really make it shine even more. There were a few instances where the dialogue or certain plot points felt slightly awkward, but these were not issues that overtook the strengths of the novel and the overall prose of Graham.
Overall, I've given The Woodcutter King four stars.
A world artfully crafted, full of adventure and surprises. A fantasy experience that enthralls one with adventure. Hard to put this one down.
This book is in the "Lord of the Rings" category. I can't wait to see the movie! I loved the way the characters took shape in a very visual way. There has to be many sequels in the future!
